Edit Housing development
MUCH of Glasgow's south side is taken up with sandstone villas and tenements ... but this hasn't always been the case.
This photograph was taken in Pollokshields in the 1870s. Villa development in Pollokshields was still in its infancy, having begun in 1851 with developments to the south of the Paisley canal.
Pollokshields West and Pollokshields East were originally two separate burghs and were incorporated into the City of Glasgow in 1891.
While Pollokshields East grew industrially and commercially, Pollokshields West was less fortunate, thanks to a limitation on the style of housing and to shops or trade being developed until at least the first decade of the new century.
