16/6/2008Fantastic four mark reaching one

EVERY baby's first birthday is special. But for the Baig family it marks the end of an amazing and very busy first year as parents.

Because they have not one, but four babies.

Naweed and Fizza Baig, from Pollokshields, had quads after what they vowed would be a final attempt at IVF in Pakistan.

They had been trying for a baby since they got married eight years ago and two attempts at IVF at Glasgow's Royal Infirmary had failed.

Yesterday, they marked the first birthday of their "miracle" babies, boys Muhammad Jawad, Aun Abbas, Ali Raza and baby girl Insiya Zahra.

Businessman Naweed, 33, said: "The 366 days of this year have all been different and each one's been better than the last.

"We didn't let each other know how we felt about not having kids, but the last eight years have been nothing compared with this last year.

"The kids are amazing and my wife is amazing with them. She's the best mother they could have."

Fizza, 29, said: "It's been amazing busy but we've enjoyed every minute.

"I don't get any time to myself now but I wouldn't change it."

The quads, who are believed to be the first born to a British Asian family in the UK, have grown up fast. Ali Raza is already walking and the others are not far behind.

The babies are the third generation of the family to be born in Scotland. And the Muslim couple put their arrival down to the pilgrimages they made to holy shrines in Iran, Medina and Mecca.

They even ate holy soil from the grave of a saint in Iraq before Fizza's last IVF treatment.

Doctors initially told the couple they were having twins, but then it was revealed just two weeks before the birth that there were four babies.

They were born by Caesarean at the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital, Glasgow, on June 11 last year and were all home six weeks later.

It took just four minutes for them all to be delivered and there were 30 people in the operating theatre, including their proud dad.

The family are throwing a party for 200 people today.

Next month the quads will go on their first flight to visit Fizza's family in Pakistan.

And in September they'll start nursery so Fizza can go back to Strathclyde University to study hotel and hospitality management.

She said: "I'm looking forward to it, but I'll miss them"

7am The quads wake. They sleep in a double bed with Fizza, while dad sleeps on a single alongside. Once one is awake they wake the others up. They watch CBeebies.

8am Fizza starts getting them washed and dressed, which takes two hours. Breakfast takes ages as Fizza has to go round four hungry mouths

9.30am Naweed goes to work, while Fizza usually spends the day at home as she needs Naweed to be around if she wants to go out. It takes two hours to get the quads ready for an outing with clothes, food and changing bag, plus two people for two double buggies. Naweed had to swap his beloved BMW for a people carrier. Going shopping takes hours as the family need so much food ... and as they get stopped by people interested in the babies.

8pm Fizza starts getting the babies ready for bed, which takes more than two hours.

10.30pm Bed time. The family go through 264 nappies a week, a large multi-pack of milk every day-and-a-half and the children usually have to have their clothes changed up to four times a day. The couple spend up to £300 a week on shopping just for the babies.
